Flooring
Hardwood flooring
Wood
flooring has a prestigious look which adds sustainable value to
your home. Hardwood floors come in countless species, widths and
colors; to match any decor. With proper care and maintenance and
due to technology improvements hardwood floors are now come resistant
to fading and scratching and can usually be refinished several times.
There are two major types of hardwood flooring:
1. Solid wood flooring is milled from a solid piece of
lumber, (IE no gluing or joining to produce the strip or plank)
and must be installed on a wood subfloor with nails or cleats.
Solid hardwood flooring has been around for centuries, and currently
comes in both pre- finished and unfinished.
2. Engineered Wood Flooring is essentially plywood with
a wood veneer in the species of your choosing. It’s advantages
are (1) it does not expand and contract as much as solid wood
floors, (2) it is not as thick, which in some cases causes height
problems while transitioning from other flooring types, and (3)
it is able to be installed over wood subfloors or concrete, because
of its multiple install methods. (Glue down, glue together floating,
click together floating, or nail/staple down. Engineered wood
flooring has not been around as long but has a good track record
and also comes in both pre- finished and unfinished versions
Keys
to a good flooring installation are choosing a installation method
that is correct for the circumstances, preparing the subfloor well
before hard wood install, installing the floor per the manufacturer’s
guidelines.
Most common types include:
• Domestic: Cherry Flooring, White Oak Flooring,
Red Oak Flooring, Walnut Flooring, Brazilian Cherry Flooring,
Maple Flooring, White Ash Flooring, Birch Flooring, Beech Flooring,
Cypress Flooring, Douglas Fir Flooring, etc
• Exotic: Brazilian Cherry Flooring, Blackwood Flooring,
Teak Flooring, Tigerwood Flooring, Brazilian Walnut Flooring,
Rosewood Flooring, Cork Flooring, etc

Laminate Flooring
Laminate
wood flooring combines a realistic impression of real hardwood,
stone and tile with an extremely durable finish. Laminate Floors
have become a popular alternative to real hardwood and vinyl floors
because of their ease of install and price. Examples of Laminate
floors include Mohawk, Shaw, Quickstep, Wilsonart, Tarkett, and
most notably Pergo.
Although these Laminated wood floors are not really wood, they are
impact and scratch resistant and do not normally fade or stain.
Laminate floor installation was once dominated by products that
had to be glued together, but recently the click together method
has become more favorable because it is glue less and therefore
much easier to install. Laminate flooring is always floated, (just
held down by its own weight) so it can be installed over most subfloors
and sometimes even the existing floor covering. Glueless laminate
floors are a very good do-it-yourself (diy) product, but professional
installations typically provide better results. Pro installs are
less likely to have problems down the road like plank separation,
hollow sound while walking, and pinching due to expansion.

Tile Flooring
The earliest forms of tiles are found around 13th
century BCE, and just like then tile floors and walls are typically
the ultimate symbol of natural beauty and wealth. Tile floor styles
are truly in infinite
due to the differences in tile shape, tile size, tile color, layout
pattern, grout spacing, grout color, borders, mosaics, etc.
Ceramic tile and porcelain tile are a natural product
made up of clay, a number of other naturally-occurring minerals
and water. Both these tiles come in both glazed and unglazed tiles.
Glazed ceramic tile has a ceramic coating applied to the tile body
which gives the tile its color and finish. Other Types of tiles
include: Slate, travertine, Granite, Marble, and other naturally
occurring types of rocks.
Benefits of tile floors include durability and scratch
resistance, ability to survive fire and water damage, and ease of
cleaning due to low permeability.

Wall to Wall Carpeting
Carpeting not only quiets a room but also offers homeowners more
warmth and softness to touch than any other flooring product. Carpet
is also more forgiving when installed over uneven subfloors, such
as an uneven concrete slab. The newest trends in carpeting are more
sophisticated elegant patterned designs. Many patterned textured
carpets such as multi-looped berbers are becoming more popular with
homeowners. The result gives a more three-dimensional appearance
and pattern-on-pattern gives carpeting a more artistic and elegant
look and also helps hide traffic patterns.
Advancements in carpet fiber technology and in carpet construction
are making carpets softer, more stain-resistant and helping retain
their like-new appearance far better than ever before. (See our
Mohawk Smart Stand Carpet page for an example.) Among the most popular
choices in carpeting construction with homeowners today are berber
carpet, patterned carpets and textured cut pile saxonies that don't
show foot prints or traffic patterns.
Even carpet cushions have dramatically been improved. Carpet cushions
are now available that will block spills from penetrating the cushion
and soaking into the subfloor. Some cushions help eliminate odors
in your carpet as well.

Vinyl flooring / Resilient
Flooring No other floor covering category offers
the variety of colors and patterns as vinyl flooring! Thanks to
some great advancements in wear layer and backing technology and
styling, today's vinyl floors (also called resilient floors) have
been changed forever. Today's unique manufacturing processes can
replicate the look and textures of real ceramic tile, stone and
wood grains. Vinyl
flooring is manufactured in both sheet and tile. Both types of vinyl
flooring come in a wide array of different designs, colors and price
points.
The more expensive vinyl sheet flooring and tiles have better resistance
to staining, scratches, gouges and tearing. Many have special fiberglass
backings to prevent shrinkage and tearing. Not only is the performance
better but so is the the warranty on the high-end vinyl floors.
Also, as you go up in quality you will also notice improved styling
and more textural realism in these floors.
Most of the vinyl flooring manufacturers are offering special fiberglass
backings combined with extremely durable wear layers to improve
durability and allow the vinyl flooring to be installed without
any glue, or glue only applied around the perimeter of the room.
The leading vinyl flooring manufacturers in the USA are Armstrong,
Mannington, IVC (Dreamscape), Congoleum and Tarkett.
